5-Hour Morning Inshore Fishing in Orange Beach

Picture yourself casting into the productive inshore waters of Orange Beach at first light, with Captain Charlie or Gill guiding you to the hottest fishing spots around the Alabama Gulf Coast. This private 5-hour morning charter puts you on redfish, speckled trout, cobia, and other local favorites without the crowds. Whether you're a seasoned angler or picking up a rod for the first time, Southern Sun Inshore Charters tailors the trip to your skill level. Your fishing license, all gear, and bait are covered—just show up ready to fish and let the captain handle the rest.

What to Expect on the Water

Your morning starts early when you meet Captain Charlie or Gill at the dock, where you'll board a well-equipped inshore boat designed for navigating the shallow bays, grass flats, and nearshore structure around Orange Beach. This isn't a cattle boat situation—with just 2 anglers max, you get personalized attention and plenty of room to fish comfortably. The captain will brief you on the day's game plan based on tides, weather, and what's been biting lately. You'll spend your 5 hours working prime inshore spots like oyster bars, grass beds, and structure where fish love to hang out. The beauty of inshore fishing here is the variety—one cast might bring in a bull redfish, while the next could hook a feisty speckled trout or a hard-fighting cobia.

Techniques and Tackle

Southern Sun Inshore Charters comes loaded with quality gear suited for the target species and conditions. You'll likely be throwing live bait like shrimp or small baitfish under popping corks for trout and redfish, or working artificial lures around structure for cobia and other species. The captains know when to switch up techniques—maybe sight-casting to tailing redfish on the flats or bottom fishing for black drum and sheepshead around pilings and rocks. They'll teach you the nuances of each technique, from how to work a soft plastic to reading the water for signs of fish. The boat stays in relatively protected waters, making it a comfortable ride even for those who might get queasy in rough offshore conditions.

What Anglers Are Saying

"I've fished with capt Charlie about a handful of times and I will say that fishing with him is the highlight of fall break. It was a tough trip and the conditions weren't right, but captain Charlie and gill made the trip. He makes you feel like family when you are on the boat with him. I highly recommend captain Charlie to anyone looking to fish down here." - Mike

"Captain Charlie was awesome! My family had an amazing time fishing and we will be back to fish with Southern Sun again. Hopefully soon" - Sam

"Trip with Captain Gill for the Bull redfish trip. What an experience!! If you've never done this, book now. Even my wife who is not an avid fisher said it was one of the best experiences ever. We had such great time and Captain Gill who kept us on the fish! Seriously, if you're on the fence, just book it. Worth every penny." - Keith

Species You'll Want to Hook

Redfish are the bread and butter of Orange Beach inshore fishing, and for good reason. These copper-colored bruisers can range from slot-size fish around 18-27 inches up to massive bull reds that'll test your drag system. Spring through fall offers the most consistent action, with bulls showing up in big numbers during their spawning runs. What makes redfish so exciting is their fight—they'll make powerful runs and use their broad sides to pull drag. Plus, they're not picky eaters, readily taking live shrimp, cut bait, and artificials worked near oyster bars and grass lines.

Black drum might not win beauty contests, but they're one of the most underrated fighters in these waters. These bottom-dwellers love hanging around structure like bridge pilings, jetties, and oyster reefs where they feed on crabs and mollusks. They can grow surprisingly large—fish over 30 inches aren't uncommon around Orange Beach. The thrill with black drum comes from their initial run when hooked; they use their size and power to try bulldozing their way back to structure. They bite year-round but peak during cooler months when they school up in deeper holes.

Sheepshead are the pickpockets of the inshore world, known for stealing bait with their human-like teeth and light bites. These black-striped fish hang tight to structure, especially around barnacle-covered pilings and rocks where they pick off crabs and small shellfish. While they require finesse and patience to hook consistently, landing a nice sheepshead feels like solving a puzzle. They're most active during winter and spring months, making them perfect targets when other species might be slower. Their firm white meat makes them a favorite for the dinner table too.

King mackerel add serious speed and excitement to any inshore trip when they move into nearshore waters. These torpedo-shaped fish can reach speeds over 40 mph and are famous for their blistering runs and acrobatic jumps. Orange Beach kings typically range from schoolie-size fish around 10-15 pounds up to smoker kings pushing 30+ pounds. They're most common during warmer months when baitfish concentrate along the beaches and nearshore structure. The key with kings is being ready—when they hit, they hit hard and fast, often making long runs that'll empty your reel if the drag isn't set right.

Cobia are the gentle giants of the inshore world, often mistaken for sharks due to their brown coloration and broad heads. These curious fish frequently approach the boat and can be sight-casted to in shallow water. They're strong fighters that prefer a methodical battle rather than blazing runs, using their bulk to test your tackle. Cobia season peaks from March through

Black Drum

Black drum are the heavyweights of our inshore waters, typically running 5-30 pounds but capable of hitting 90+ pounds. These gray-black bruisers love hanging around oyster beds and muddy flats in 2-20 feet of brackish water. Spring is prime time when they school up for spawning - that's when you'll hear their distinctive drumming sounds underwater. They're absolute bulldogs on the rod, using those powerful jaws and thick bodies to wear you down. The smaller ones under 15 pounds make excellent table fare with sweet, flaky meat. Here's the key: use fresh crab or cut bait right on the bottom near structure. They're notorious for picking at bait, so when you feel that telltale tap-tap-tap, set the hook hard and hold on tight.

Black Drum

Cobia

Cobia are the brown sharks that aren't sharks - big, curious fish that'll come right up to the boat to investigate. These solitary hunters average 30-50 pounds but can reach 100+ pounds and 6 feet long. We spot them cruising near the surface around buoys, wrecks, and channel markers in 20-60 feet. Spring through fall is prime time when they're moving through our waters. What makes them exciting is sight fishing - you can actually see these fish and cast directly to them. They're excellent eating with firm, white meat that tastes like a cross between shark and grouper. The trick is having a bucktail jig or crab ready to pitch when you spot one. They're usually curious but spook if you get too aggressive. Make a good cast ahead of them and work that jig naturally - they'll often follow it right to the boat.

Cobia

King Mackerel

King mackerel are pure speed demons that'll test your drag system in a hurry. These silver bullets average around 30 pounds but can push past 90 pounds. We find them in 40-150 feet of water during warmer months, especially around structure and current breaks. They're voracious feeders hitting blue runners, menhaden, and anything shiny moving fast. What guests love is that screaming first run - these fish can peel line like few others. They're decent eating when smaller, though the meat is rich and oily. The secret is using wire leaders because their razor-sharp teeth will cut through mono instantly. I like to troll with live bait on a stinger rig - one hook in the nose, treble hook trailing behind. Kings love to hit bait from the back, so that trailing hook is your insurance policy.

King Mackerel

Redfish

Redfish are the bread and butter of our inshore trips - copper-colored beauties with that distinctive black spot near the tail. They run anywhere from slot-size 16-27 inchers up to hefty 40+ pound bulls in deeper water. You'll find them cruising grass flats, oyster bars, and shallow marshes in 1-4 feet of water. They're year-round fish here, but fall and spring offer the best action when they're most active. What makes them special is their willingness to eat almost anything and their powerful fights in shallow water. The smaller "slot" fish are perfect table fare with mild, sweet meat. Watch for tailing fish in skinny water - when you see that copper back and tail fin, cast ahead of where they're heading with a soft plastic or topwater plug. They spook easy in the shallows, so keep your distance.

Redfish

Sheepshead

These black-and-white striped "convict fish" are some of the smartest around dock pilings, bridges, and barnacle-covered structure. Most run 1-8 pounds, but 20-pounders show up regularly around Orange Beach. They've got human-like teeth perfect for crushing barnacles and crabs - their main diet. Spring months are best when they move shallow to spawn. What makes them fun is the challenge - they're notorious bait thieves with a light bite that'll clean your hook before you know it. The payoff is some of the best eating fish in the Gulf with sweet, white meat. My trick: use fiddler crabs on small hooks, get tight to the structure, and watch your rod tip like a hawk. The second you see it twitch, set the hook immediately or they'll steal your bait every time.
